For those wondering why Circuit City went under

02-28-09

Today, I finally got around to opening an XBox 360 game(Rainbow Six: Vegas 2) I bought from Circuit City two weekends ago.  Only to find that there was no DVD in the case (well, other than the demo of Endwar that was supposed to come with it).  Having read http://www.digitalbattle.com/2009/01/27/boy-gets-redneck-shit-instead-of-madden/ a couple weeks back, I immediately pulled the cellophane from the trash.  I didn’t notice any signs of tampering when I opened it and I didn’t see any signs of tampering after pulling it from the trash.

It’s certainly possible that Circuit City had resealed the cellophane – I’ve seen that happen before at Walmart with a sound card I bought there a few years back that wasn’t what it was supposed to be.  The XBox Certificate of Authority seal wasn’t broken either and didn’t appear to have been tampered with.  Unfortunately, I’ve messed with those in the past, it’s very possible to remove one from a case and later replace it without it looking tampered with.  Microsoft needs to steal some technology from the movie and music industry – those seals are damn near impossible to take off without breaking.

The best part of this is that even if I thought the old Circuit City might believe the story (yeah right, I’d find it hard to believe if it hadn’t happened to me), the liquidators won’t care.  And further, the purchase was made with a “no return, no exchange” policy.  The only blessing in all this is that I didn’t have to pay full price for the game, but I’m still out $25.  For which, I got a green case with a center arm that can hold two DVDs, complete with cover showing the game, the game manual (in pristine NEW condition), and a demo disk of Endwar.
